As an African American and a public ﬁgure, he knew his actions would be scrutinized, though he shielded his stress from the admiring public. A statue of Ashe, with books in one hand, tennis racket in the other, and surrounded by children was dedicated on July 10, 1996, on what would have been his ﬁfty-third birthday. The statue was dedicated on Monument Avenue in Richmond, a street where statues of Confederate war heroes also stand. The USTA named their New York stadium Arthur Ashe Stadium in 1997.
Mattie died in 1950 due to pregnancy complications at the age of 27. In a poignant autobiography, Off the Court, written by Ashe and Neil Amdur, Ashe noted that losing his mother affected him greatly. His father had a tremendous inﬂuence on him, however, and took on the role of both mother and father for Ashe and his younger brother, Johnny. Mrs. Otis Berry, a widow in her late 50s, moved into the Ashe home and for the next 14 years helped Ashe’s father raise the boys. The senior Ashe did not hesitate to discipline his sons if he felt they misbehaved.
