Given both his need, and desire, to excel in the Tripos examinations, Marshall may therefore not have attended them. A few implications of this syllabus should be noted. First of all, it required the services of an independent tutor, paid for by the student.
2 Undergraduate at St John’s College, Cambridge (1861–65) On 10 June 1861 Alfred Marshall was admitted to St John’s College, Cambridge, as ‘a pensioner’, that is, an ordinary student paying for everything without exemptions. The certificate for admission was provided by the Rev. Hessey as Headmaster of Merchant Taylors’ School. Marshall’s life as an undergraduate student at Cambridge was to last three and a half years, from the middle of 1861 when he had just turned nineteen, to early 1865, the year during which he turned twenty-three.
