If I am right that teachers and journalists are part of a common explanation business, then it makes increasing sense to bring them together in classrooms. My university recently offered a couple of courses that did so. One, on “Studying the Media With the Media,” was co-taught, with the help of a small internal grant, by Barbara Ransby, a UIC professor of history and African American studies, Gretchen Helfrich, a local FM radio talk show host, and Salim Muwakkil, a Chicago Tribune columnist.
Such a process more closely approximates real life, where we usually learn information not from prepackaged sources, but by inferring it from our reading and conversation. Just as few of us would try to learn baseball by first studying the Baseball Encyclopedia and only then playing in a game or attending one, we shouldn’t withhold the culture of ideas and arguments from students until they’ve learned supposedly foundational facts.
