And not Re-imaging! It is difficult to view Re-imagine! as a simple sequel to A Passion for Excellence. A sequel is commonly defined as a continuation of an earlier story. Now while it might be accurate to portray A Passion for Excellence as a sequel to In Search of Excellence and while there are certain thematic continuities that link Peters’ first to his later book (doubtless similar continuities also appear in the works of Roberts), it is difficult to view Re-imagine! as a sequel to A Passion for Excellence since this work (as we shall see in Chapter 3) is quite unlike the other texts listed by Roberts in terms of layout, tone and narrative.

The defence against the charge that Peters’ works are ghost written, therefore, is simple and straightforward. Peters does receive editorial assistance and he does reach out to colleagues for both guidance and inspiration – who among us does not? But it would be a terrible exaggeration to suggest that Peters has simply employed others to produce the key texts that we will analyse in this work. In short, Peters writes his own books, although we have to indulge a rather elastic definition of ‘writing’ here because the first drafts of Peters’ seminar text (Peters, 1993) and his most recent major work (Peters, 2003) were, in fact, dictated (see Chapter 2).

In an attempt to refine the concept of leadership, Peters and Waterman argued that leaders are visible. They manage by walking about. They lead by example. Maintaining close contact with staff and with customers, leaders work to foster key values (‘customers first’, ‘zero defects’) which, we are told, help to bind people together in the pursuit of common goals. 34 The early works of Tom Peters (6) Stick to the knitting Excellent companies, Peters and Waterman argued, remain focused upon the key skills of the organization.
