The way knowledge about the game spreads is by a natural word-of-mouth process. Children are not given a long list of rules to learn; instead they learn by playing the game and the game uses familiar ideas--Chutes and Ladders, spinners, arithmetic. The teacher is not needed to stand over the children's play but is needed as a resource to help construct "winning" expressions optimally or to make other expert moves.
