Storage is essential ingredient of any data-centric sensor network application. Common uses of storage in WSN applications include archival storage, temporary data storage, storage of sensor calibration tables, in-network indexing, in-network querying, and code storage for network reprogramming. Data storage issue in sensor networks is a very different problem than storage in other computing systems. The demand for data storage comes from the requirements of sensor network nodes to store information collected in real-time, in order to later relay or serve to queries.

Due to it’s unique features and constraints, the main goals for efficient data storage management in sensor networks are: (a) minimizing storage size for data block to maximize the amount of data retention, (b) minimizing energy expenditure for data storage and retrieval, (c) supporting efficient response to complex query on the stored data, and (d) delivering efficient data management under constrained storage capacity etc. There are several methods proposed in the literature for data storage management, with most of them achieving a trade off among these different goals.

But if the node itself is the intended destination, it remains awake for the subsequent data packet. In addition to shortening the preamble, X-MAC also addresses the problem of multiple transmitters sending the entire preamble even though the receiver is already awake. In such situation for X-MAC, when a transmitter is attempting to send but detects a preamble and is waiting for a clear channel, the node listens to the channel and if it hears an acknowledgment frame from the node that it wishes to send to, the transmitter will backoff a random amount and then send its data without a preamble.
