So I argue, as far as the debates on lived body vs. gender are concerned, that we should retain and reconceptualize the category of gender in terms of social structure. And that means that there are certain very simple definitions of social structure or variables about social structure that position people and make understandable the opportunities they face. And I argue that those are, I think I say three: there is the gendered division of labor, normative heterosexuality that affects everyone—people are located in different positions in the structure of normative heterosexuality—and what Rob Connell1 calls hierarchies of power as gendered.
