With the introduction of new technology such as CADCAM, and new materials such as medium density fibreboard (MDF) and plastics, however, the design element is growing in importance. Indeed, in some areas of this specialism, such as the design of office equipment and public seating, there can be no distinction between the roles of the furniture designer and industrial/product designer. If you are good at woodwork, and feel that there is a role for the craftsman, do not despair. BTEC Higher National level students can progress to a final year of a BA honours course or even go to an MA course. Success depends not only on the piece of paper that proves you have reached a certain academic level, but also on your portfolio of work. This will allow potential employers or higher education interviewers to see and judge your talents for themselves. As you have seen in the previous unit, there are a lot of different design courses to choose from. These range from the specialist to the general, and from the common to the rare.
Contextual Studies The context in which designers design is important, and the lessons of the past are particularly useful because of the retrospective analysis that has already been undertaken. In such studies you will be led behind the scenes. You will become more aware of the way that politics, society, economics, fashion and social change affect what is designed and the way that it is designed. You will see that change not only affects one specialised area of design but all areas. You will become more aware of the relationship between the design disciplines, between design and architecture, and design and fine art.
