Marx (1990) writes, capitalism “converts the worker into a crippled monstrosity by furthering his particular skill as in a forcing-house, through the suppression of a whole world of productive drives and inclinations, just as in the states of La Plata they butcher a whole beast for the sake of his hide or his tallow” (481). In this quotation, Marx separates the monster from productive and generative capacities of the proletariat, equating the monster both with alienation and slaughter. indd 18 10/4/2010 3:12:51 PM Intermezzo 19 proletariat is therefore to overcome this crippled, monstrous state by becoming fully human.

Marx thus misses the connection between the infinite productivity of human species-being and the figure of the monster as a positive, zoömorphic force of creation and ontological destabilization of the categories of human and animal that both bind and separate species under capitalism. In fact, we would argue that Marx could not imagine this connection precisely because the historical conditions were not yet fully developed. It is our contention that Hardt and Negri are able to name the monster as a political project precisely because of the global reach of bioproduction (the production of social, economic, and political life).

In the hands of Hardt and Negri, the monstrous is a dynamic, boundless, and infinitely creative ontological becoming that constantly produces the commonwealth outside all measure. This positive definition of the monster beyond its relation to law hinges on a key rethinking of Marx’s definition of surplus. Capitalism has always been driven by the production of surplus value, which is value generated by expropriated labor over and above the value necessary for its own reproduction. While labor power is capable of producing a value greater than its individual worth, the constituting powers of intellectual and immaterial labor (intelligence, experience, knoweldges, desires, affects) also produce a common surplus that cannot be fully expropriated by capital.
